In a brief ceremony Thursday, Lakeside Organic Gardens owner Dick Peixoto and his wife Marisela Peixoto handed a check to Watsonville Fire Capt. Matt Ryan, a gift that is sure to give several children a happy Christmas.
The check for $15,000 was for Toys for Tots Santa Cruz County, one of several donations Peixoto plans to make this year.
He will also give to Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes, CASA of Santa Cruz County, Pajaro Valley Shelter Services and Monarch Services, among others.
Peixoto said he receives calls from out-of-town organizations hoping for donations, but wants his donations to support local causes.
“We have a fantastic community,” he said. “We are firm believers in giving back to the community we live in.”
Toys for Tots Santa Cruz County Program Coordinator Delilah Valadez said Peixoto’s donation will help the organization’s mission to give gifts to the county’s low-income children.
Valadez said that Peixoto also helped Toys for Tots purchase several bicycles, locks and helmets for Christmas gifts.
“I was overjoyed and awed and humbled by their generosity,” Valadez said. “I cannot believe the extent of their generosity year after year.”
Valadez said that Toys for Tots has collected enough toys this year despite the fact that donations came in somewhat slower this year.
“There is a call and the community hears it and feels it and senses it,” she said. “That’s one more indication that this is a season of magic.”
