Lakeside Organic Gardens now offering organic broccoli leaf
Lakeside Organic Gardens LLC, headquartered in Watsonville, CA, recently announced that the company now offers highly nutritious organic broccoli leaf.
“Some argue that broccoli leaf is even more nutritious than kale,” said Lindsey Roberts, marketing communications director for the company. “Try them sautéed in a little olive oil and garlic just like you would with collards. They’re delicious, earthy and resemble broccoli just enough to remind you of where they came from.”

The Peixoto family began farming in Pajaro Valley in the late 1800s and perfected conventional growing throughout the 1900s. As their passions for harvesting the riches of the soil grew and evolved, the family made a committed decision to convert all their farms to 100 percent organic. Lakeside Organic Gardens was launched by Dick Peixoto and his extended family in 1996.
“We grow, field-pack and ship over 45 commodities year-round,” said Roberts. “We add seasonal items like green beans, bell peppers, zucchini and cucumber during the summer, and in the winter we grow squashes such as butternut, acorn, kabocha, spaghetti and sweet dumpling.”
The company also produces radishes that are known for their consistent sizing and supplies. Dandelions offered by Lakeside Organic are popular for their large size and hardness, which is the result of the climate and soil conditions in Watsonville.
“Our spinach is cut with the root intact which helps extend the shelf life of this delicate leafy green, and gives the consumer more options for their favorite spinach recipes,” Roberts pointed out.
“Eating all the parts of a plant is gaining popularity today,” she continued. “Many people steam the spinach stem and roots with onion and herbs.”
She also noted that as kimchi and other fermented foods grow in popularity, so does the demand for items like green cabbage, red cabbage, Napa cabbage, radishes, leeks, turnips and beets, all of which Lakeside also offers.
“We grow all of our items in California on approximately 1,200 certified organic acres,” Roberts explained. “In order to keep a steady supply for our customers through the winter, we also grow on approximately 800 certified organic acres in the Imperial Valley.”
Lakeside Organic Gardens sells to distributors, national chain grocers, processors and personally delivers to grocery stores and restaurants in its “local route,” which includes Bay Area cities.
“Our produce is sold nationwide and into Western Canada,” Roberts added.
